Hey #Davis7!  Welcome to week 3 of digital learning!  We know you miss our classes and please know we miss you too!  Below is a BIG reading but chunked for y'all so that way it does not seem like a TON of reading and work at once!

The following Q’s are divided into three sets. Each set follows a part of the article and the Q’s are due at different times. Enjoy the article and Q’s that Ms. Jordan and I put together regarding globalization and the coronavirus pandemic.

Please type in complete sentences. Title your Google Docs:   “Set I Q’s”    “Set II Q’s”   and  “Set III Q’s when you send them to us.  -10 points if you do not follow these directions. No exceptions.

Set I Q’s due Tuesday, March 31 by Noon
  1. What is the definition of a pandemic?
  2. Look at the picture of the three people on the bottom of page 1. Who are these three people and what do they have in common?
  3. In history, what are the two largest pandemics in world history according to the graph/list?
  4. According to the Johns Hopkins University picture/chart what are the five countries with the most confirmed cases? How many total confirmed cases are there in the world? What continent appears to be the most affected?
  5. How many people have recovered from the coronavirus?

  1. Why do you think minimum wage is different in different countries? (opinionated)
  2. What is minimum wage in the United States?
  3. According to the New York Times article title what does “containment” mean?
  4. Approximately how much of the world was affected by the Spanish Flu and how many Americans died from the Spanish Flu?
  5. Explain how interconnectedness created the current problem with the coronavirus.
  6. After reading the extensive scenario about a Chinese factory what do you think would be two possible steps that might happen next? (opinionated)
Set III Q’s due by Tuesday, April 7 by Noon
  1. After reading the six blue Q’s regarding the town of Bryson City what are two other possible questions people would consider asking? (opinionated)
  2. How has the coronavirus affected the European Union?
  3. The “Analysis Q” states: How the world will look after the coronavirus pandemic. What is one change the world needs to make going forward after seeing how this pandemic has affected globalization (opinionated)

Answer the following Q's based on the flick and the Globalization Chapter PDF and please e-mail these answers to your social studies teacher.  Please use MLA format heading on the document and you do not need to write in complete sentences.

  1. (Opinionated Q) What do you think goes into making a shoe?  Yes. I asked you that. What does it take to make a shoe? Take off your shoe, look at it, and think about the materials your shoe is made of.  What is needed to make a shoe???
  2. (Opinionated Q) Do you think it is possible for a shoe to be 100% fully manufactured in the United States?
  3. (Opinionated Q) Why do you think Americans buy shoes made in other countries?
  4. Define globalization.
  5. Why are so many American companies outsourcing (making their products) in Asia?
  6. Define the following terms in your own words after reading them from the text:  Economic interdependence, free trade, multinational corporation
  7. What happened to "Made in the USA", meaning why are shoes no longer made in the USA?
  8. List three pros and cons of globalization based off of the reading and the flick.  
  9. Ask one of your parents the following Q and provide their answer:  Do you believe globalization has more positive or negative effects on us as Americans?

Assignment #1 Please read the following article from Scholastic on Globalization and answer the Q's below:  Globalization Scholastic Article!
  1. Is it "important" where people live according to the article?  Why/why do you think? (opinionated response)
  2. According to the article, when did globalization become popular?
  3. What is "offshoring"?
  4. The article says "countries hurt by globalization should be helped by other nations", do you agree that the countries that benefit from globalization should help those hurt or negatively affected?  Explain your answer

Assignment #2 Please read the following article about Starbucks and Globalization!  Answer the following Q in an short essay/paragraph response.  Provide as much detail as possible your answer based off of the reading:

After reading about the globalization of Starbucks, what are some pros and cons of Starbucks’ efforts to become a global company? Do you think Starbucks produces more good than bad as a global company?

Your last major "assessment" of the second trimester was the World Wars Essay Quiz.  After much consideration and grading, Ms. Jordan and I have decided not to count the essays.  The essays were not up to our standards and we found there would be more harm than help to the gradebook if we counted them. We noticed many of you ran out of time and/or did not write in a fluid manner that made chronological sense.  That being said, you will not receive the essays...This means the Third Trimester starts out fresh below!

The last week we had school, we read about the United Nations and the European Union.  Below is a short video podcast about the European Union for those of you who want to know a bit more about what the EU is... Enjoy!

After watching the YouTube flick above, you're probably thinking to yourself, "Yes, Mr. Barry, we know that we live in a GLOBAL economy".  What you probably don't realize is just HOW GLOBAL life is.  Today is a perfect example of that as you are having to do this unit at home!  Now, please fill out the following  Google Form for a HW grade.  This will be a fun little activity for you as you will now have to go through your closets!
