Welcome to the MIDDLE Ages of Europe 

Let's watch John Green's introduction to "European" history.  Let's think about why we study European history.  The fall of the Roman Empire was a history of an empire that occupied Europe, Asia, and North Africa.  With the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe entered a "dark/middle" ages of history where the connected empire became many separate kingdoms and areas.  This new era also saw the creation of a new social structure of Europe that lasted a few hundred years.  We will watch a few flicks this week and read about the famous "Middle Ages" of European history and then try to understand some of the following Q's:

1. What is feudalism?
2. Why did Europe resort to feudalism after the fall of the Roman Empire?
3. What were the different social classes in the Middle Ages and could you move up or down?
4. What was life like for each member of feudal society?
5. What was life like on a manor and a town?
6. Who were Charlemagne and William the Conqueror and what made them so darn great?
7. What was the purpose of building a castle?
8. How important was the Church during the Middle Ages?
9. What did art and architecture look like during the Middle Ages?
10. How does one become a knight and why were the knights so cool and important?
11. What was the social hierarchy of the Catholic Church?
12. What are the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church?
13. What is a coat of arms and what do they stand for?
14. Who was Joan of Arc and did she really save France?
