Human and Civil Rights Writing Assignment
Test Grade These are to be typed, MLA format, Times New Roman, one-inch margins. Each Q is worth 10 points. You must provide a minimum of five sentences in each of your answers and you must answer all parts of the Q’s.
Due Day 3 
  1. Briefly describe the United Nations and three of its goals. Provide one example of how the United Nations meets one of these goals, and how the United Nations fails to meet their goals.
  2. How does the United Nations serve some countries better than others? What types of nations do you think benefit from the United Nations? Provide an example of a nation you think the UN serves more than others. Is this fair? Why/why not?
  3. Explain a situation like the War in Gaza/Israel, Ukraine-Russian War, the massive surge in illegal immigrants coming into the United States at the southern border, the Afghan government taken over by the Taliban who are now restricting women’s rights to an education, whether nations like Iran or North Korea should be allowed to manufacture nuclear weapons, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict over the land, etc. How could the United Nations help improve these situations? Aside from sending money, what are three ways the United Nations could help these situations according to the goals of the UN. Do you think they have the ability to help? Explain why/why not.
  4. You have all heard about Jim Crow laws from readings in Language Arts, To Kill a Mockingbird, and in 5th grade when learning about the 16th St. Church bombing. Schools were some of the most affected areas of Jim Crow laws. YOU go to school! Why would the government want schools to be places where segregation laws were applied? How could schools further separate whites and blacks? How could schools be a good place to reinforce segregationist ideas? Do you think segregation still exists today in the United States in some form or fashion?
  5. Sports have always been a place where barriers have been broken. Explain how athletes have had an impact on Civil Rights and what type of message it sends to the world. You must use Jesse Owens and Tommie Smith & John Carlos’ example in your explanation. You may use other athletes as well. Do you think Smith and Carlos should have made a political statement during the Olympic Games? Do you think they should have made their statements during the national anthem? If not, when should they have made their statements? Explain your answers.

6. Human rights violations have been in the news quite a lot in recent years. China, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Uganda, & yes, in the United States. How should nations be punished for violating human rights? Should international organizations be banned or encouraged not to do business in these nations? Should these nations be allowed to host/participate in international sporting events? Explain in detail why/why not.
