Nationalism... ARE YOU LOYAL?!?! Unit Q’s


1. How did the Industrial Revolution change the way people lived in Europe, and how did it contribute to the creation of modern nation-states?


2. After the revolutions in Europe (like the French Revolution and the unifications of Germany and Italy), how did the idea of a "nation-state" challenge the old empires and monarchies?
Hint: Consider how the creation of new borders, governments, and national identities impacted the people and the map of Europe.


3. In the context of nationalism, Ernst Renan argued that a nation is not just about language, race, or territory but about shared culture, history, and values. Do you agree with his idea that nations are more about culture and shared experiences than physical boundaries? Why or why not?


4. How does nationalism in Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s relate to modern nationalism, like the "America First" movement or other nationalist movements around the world?
Hint: Think about the similarities and differences in how nationalism influences people’s identities and politics today.


5. Simon Bolívar led revolutions in South America with the goal of creating independent nations. In what ways was Bolívar’s idea of nationalism different from or similar to nationalism in Europe during the same time?

6.What's the difference between nationalism and patriotism, and how can both ideas influence a country's actions? Can nationalism sometimes be dangerous? Why or why not?  Explain how the Olympics & other sporting events show both nationalism and patriotism.
Hint: Think about how nationalism can unite a country, but also consider how it could lead to division or conflict, based on historical and modern examples.
