Wednesday, Jan 22 - Revolutions in-class essay

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Nationalism... ARE YOU LOYAL?!?! Unit Q’s

1. How did the Industrial Revolution change the way people lived in Europe, and how did it contribute to the creation of modern nation-states?

2. After the revolutions in Europe (like the French Revolution and the unifications of Germany and Italy), how did the idea of a "nation-state" challenge the old empires and monarchies?
Hint: Consider how the creation of new borders, governments, and national identities impacted the people and the map of Europe.

3. In the context of nationalism, Ernst Renan argued that a nation is not just about language, race, or territory but about shared culture, history, and values. Do you agree with his idea that nations are more about culture and shared experiences than physical boundaries? Why or why not?

4. How does nationalism in Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s relate to modern nationalism, like the "America First" movement or other nationalist movements around the world?
Hint: Think about the similarities and differences in how nationalism influences people’s identities and politics today.

5. Simon Bolívar led revolutions in South America with the goal of creating independent nations. In what ways was Bolívar’s idea of nationalism different from or similar to nationalism in Europe during the same time?

6.What's the difference between nationalism and patriotism, and how can both ideas influence a country's actions? Can nationalism sometimes be dangerous? Why or why not?  Explain how the Olympics & other sporting events show both nationalism and patriotism.
Hint: Think about how nationalism can unite a country, but also consider how it could lead to division or conflict, based on historical and modern examples.

Scientific Revolution Project! -- Due Friday, January 10, 2k25

The following thinkers are considered some of the greatest minds of the Scientific Revolution.  You are tasked with the following.  Read the document below and look at the lists of the top thinkers of the Scientific Revolution.  Create a “rankings list” of the following people.  The person who ranks #1 is the most important thinker of the Scientific Revolution. This is entirely based on your opinion.  The person who ranks at the bottom is still important, but their contributions/discoveries are the least important compared to the people on your list.  You will create a top 7 ranking list...

On a piece of paper (provided by the teacher) you will create this list and write a minimum of five sentences explaining who the person is, what their contributions were to the Scientific Revolution, and a sentence explaining why you ranked them in that particular spot on the list.  You may write in the first person for this rankings list.

You must also have one illustration/drawing for each of these thinkers.  Be creative, would ya?  You can draw a picture of one of their theories.   You can draw a picture of their invention/idea.  You must simply have at least on /illustration/drawing for each thinker that relates to the person.  Color is nice, too! LABEL the illustration/drawing as well…
